About Us

The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) is a voluntary, professional organization dedicated to advocating for the rights, interests, and professional development of Black legal practitioners across South Africa. Established during the height of systemic discrimination in 1977, the BLA has grown from a courageous group of resistance attorneys into a nationwide movement, with Gauteng serving as one of its most active and influential province. We welcome all South African law practitioners regardless of differences, working tirelessly to foster an inclusive legal fraternity.

“Welcome to the BLA Gauteng Province. As the province office operating at the heart of South Africa’s legal and commercial hub, we are committed to building on the rich legacy of resistance, professional excellence, and transformation established by our founders in 1977. Gauteng is where the first seeds of the Black Lawyers Discussion Group were sown, and today, we continue to fight the daily struggles in our courtrooms, ensuring that the legal profession reflects the diversity and lived realities of our society. We invite all advocates, attorneys, academic scholars, and law students in Gauteng to join us as we actively shape a just future.”
